The thing about accountability that everyone gets wrong

Most governance frameworks have an accountability section. Almost none of them describe what accountability actually feels like when it works, or what breaks first when it doesn’t.

The first principle: ownership without ambiguity

Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam, eaque ipsa quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt explicabo.

Nemo enim ipsam voluptatem quia voluptas sit aspernatur aut odit aut fugit, sed quia consequuntur magni dolores eos qui ratione voluptatem sequi nesciunt. Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit.

The structure looks fine on paper. But in practice, nothing gets decided fast. Proposals die in consensus loops. Accountability is fuzzy.

Three things that break first

Quis autem vel eum iure reprehenderit qui in ea voluptate velit esse quam nihil molestiae consequatur. The patterns repeat regardless of org size:

  • At vero eos et accusamus et iusto odio dignissimos ducimus qui blanditiis praesentium voluptatum
  • Voluptatum deleniti atque corrupti quos dolores et quas molestias excepturi sint occaecati cupiditate
  • Similique sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollitia animi, id est laborum et dolorum fuga

Temporibus autem quibusdam et aut officiis debitis aut rerum necessitatibus saepe eveniet ut et voluptates repudiandae sint et molestiae non recusandae.

What actually works in practice

Itaque earum rerum hic tenetur a sapiente delectus, ut aut reiciendis voluptatibus maiores alias consequatur aut perferendis doloribus asperiores repellat. Three approaches that consistently move the needle:

  1. Hanc ego cum teneam sententiam, quid est cur verear ne ad eam non possim accommodare
  2. Praeterea iter est quasdam res quas ex communi opinione concedimus, ut esse animum credamus
  3. Quaedam earum sunt huius modi, ut idem etiam ipsis sint accommodatae, sed melius est

The technical layer

Aliquid ex ea commodi consequatur quis autem vel eum iure reprehenderit. Sometimes the answer is structural: a clear governance.run() call signature, an owner, and a deadline. No more, no less.

The hard part isn’t designing accountability. It’s designing it so it survives contact with reality.
